Addressing newsmen yesterday, Dr. Aliyu Usman Bappal, chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Kaduna State chapter, said that the union is not ruling out the possibility of down tooling if its abducted member, Dr Stephen Kitchener is not released soon.

“Dr Kitchener was abducted on Tuesday at about 5pm at his private residence in Tukur-Tukur, Zaria and since then, no contact has been established with his abductors”, Dr. Bappah said.

He described the abduction of the septuagenarian as unfortunate and most traumatic.

He, according to Leadership added that, "the inexplicable abduction of an iconic doctor and senior citizen in the course of rendering scarce medical service to the people of Nigeria poses an immediate and permanent danger to the actualisation of Universal Health coverage as currently advocated by the NMA and the federal government.”

“Although we will explore all avenues to
effect his release, but we are not ruling out the possibility of down tooling in solidarity if he is not released as soon as possible,” Dr Bappah said.

“NMA, therefore, wishes to challenge the federal government to activate all necessary machinery to ensure a speedy and safe release of Dr Kitchener and all other abducted Nigerians particularly the. innocent school girls still missing from the dark incident in Government Girls’ Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State," he said.
