A huge explosion at a butane gas depot at Nnewi, Amabra state on Thursday has led to the death of "tens" of Nigerians, according to President Muhammadu Buhari.

"I saw around 100 charred corpses." David Onwuchekwa, a newsperson at the scene said. Most of the dead were customers at the plants or people who lived nearby, he added.

Several reports point to the fact that the fire was caused as a result of the impatience of some people.

According to UK Guardian, Emeka Peters, a witness at the scene said the fire broke out at about 11am when a lorry that had finished discharging fresh gas at the Chikason Group Gas plant left without waiting to observe the prescribed cooling time.

Also Vanguard said the blast was triggered when a truck began discharging cooking gas without waiting for the mandatory cooling time.

“The fire exploded like a bomb and the whole gas station went up in thick, black smoke amidst an explosion from cooking gas cylinders,” Peters continued. “Many people were killed and most of them were those that had been in the station queuing all day to get their cylinders refilled.”

“Many of them were burned beyond recognition and I doubt if many family members of the dead victims would be able to identify the remains of their loved ones,” said Peters.

It is saddening to note that the hurrying and rushing of the gas station workers has lead to this tragedy.

Time is important of course, but one needs to exercise patience on some occasions. The impatience at Nnewi has led to the death of hundreds and instead of celebrating Christmas today, several families are mourning.

This is devastating and one can't but think about the lives that have been lost due to this one act of impatience. One of the dead could be a very important person in the future.

May their souls rest in peace.
