Recently the Saudi Arabian government, through its embassy, donated dates to internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Nigeria, through the Ministry For Foreign Affairs, but it was alleged that the dates were diverted and sold in the open market.

Daily Trust sought to look deeper into the controversial issue. The IDPs are mainly those affected by the Boko Haram insurgency in North-Eastern Nigeria.

The Chairman of IDPs in Area 1, Abuja, Ibrahim Adamu said, “National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), distributed half a trailer-load of dates, and said they would take the remaining half trailer-load to the IDP camp in Wara.”

According to him, there are four major IDP camps in Abuja Area 1, New Kuchigoro, Wasa and Wara. He said in Area 1, they have a population of 2,740, while in New Kuchigoro, they have a population of 1,500 people, and in Wara they have 3,000 and in Wasa they have 6,000. That means the IDPs in Wasa and New Kuchigoro in Abuja did not get a single date.

Adamu said some of the recipients of the donations told him that they want to sell the dates to traders because they want to buy maize flour, while some told him they sold the dates to buy festive clothes for their children to celebrate Sallah.

However, Vice Chairman of New Kuchogoro IDP Camp, Alhaji Usman Adamu, told Daily Trust that, “We do not know NCRMIDP, and we have not been given even a single date from the ones donated by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for distribution to IDPS.” He called on the government to investigate, arrest and prosecute those who diverted the donation.

A reliable source within Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) said the management of the National Mosque in Abuja investigated the matter and found out that the IDPs sold the dates to buy other food items they are more conversant with, even though it was clearly marked ‘not for sale’.

Similarly, an official of the NCFRMI, Yusha’u Muhammad said they distributed the dates to Area 1 and Wara in Abuja, but he did not disclose how the remaining dates were distributed.
