Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has stepped down, leaving his official residence after a record five years in power overshadowed by worsening security and a weakening economy.
He became president after former military rulerPervez Musharrafwas forced to resign in 2008.
Asif Ali Zardari says he plans to rejuvenate his party after it was voted out of power in May’s general elections.
"I want to tell Nawaz Sharif ( newly elected Prime Minister for the 3rd time), we will not let you weaken. We will fight shoulder to shoulder with you against the forces which want politics of gun instead of the politics of ballot."
Mamnoon Hussainof the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-N replaces Zardari and will be sworn in as the new president on Monday.
