Mr Sunday Adeshina, a former Deputy President of the Association of Blind Persons, has urged the National Assembly to pass the bill aimed at addressing the challenges facing people living with disabilities.
Adeshina made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in IIorin.

He said the quick passage of the bill would improve the living conditions of physically challenged persons.

Adeshina wondered why the bill, which had been before the National Assembly since 1999, was yet to be passed into law.

He urged the Assembly to work on the accelerated passage of the bill which he said had passed through second reading.

Adeshina also called on the Federal Government to create a commission that would solely cater for the welfare of physically challenged persons..

He said the commission, when established, would be able to identify the problems confronting physically challenged persons with a view to solving them.

Adeshina also called on the three tiers of government to provide jobs for qualified physically challenged persons to discourage street begging.

He also urged state governments to pay monthly allowances to unemployed physically challenged persons as being done in Sokoto and Jigawa.

"Government and wealthy Nigerians should assist people living with disabilities in order to discourage street begging and other anti-social acts,’’ Adeshina said.
