Winning election in Nigeria is no longer as complicated as it used to be in the past where you must be in a popular political party, have a godfather or even a godmother who will anoint you at midnight. You need not be an orator with chains of university degrees and a heavy war chest to win an election in this country. Although I do not discountenance these attributes as factors in winning polls in our country, there are other new and credible ways of winning elections in our fatherland.

The power of incumbency as a factor in winning polls in Nigeria is becoming obsolete. If you are in doubt, remember Imo 2011 and Ekiti 2014 gubernatorial polls where this factor was repudiated. Also, the frequent quarrels between godfathers and their political godsons do not make godfatherism an attractive option either. With 2015 around the corner, we may witness more electoral losses by incumbents. It will deepen and stabilize our democracy. Again, the winner takes all philosophy is no longer in vogue in Nigerian politics. What is reigning now is an all-inclusive administration.

Many reasons prompted this article. These include the outcome of Ekiti transparent governorship poll which some ‘bad belle’ people are trying, in vain, to taint and the recent intimation by a brother and friend of his aspiration to contest one of the polls in Imo come 2015. Let me keep the identity of this fellow secret as well as the position he is eyeing in case he makes a u-turn. You know that politicians can change without much notice. And in politics, anything can happen including change in ambition. This treatise will also be beneficial to those interested in political contests and those already in the game and it contains tested nuggets for electoral victory in Nigeria.
