On Wednesday, Muhammdu Buhari, Nigeria's president-elect ordered his staff to obey all traffic rules.
Buhari lamented a situation where fellow citizens are punished at traffic points and public roads because of the ''arrogant lawlessness of the leaders''. The gesture may seem like nothing to outside but in a near lawless society like Nigeria, Buhari's directive is a healthy dose of fresh air. If the President can obey traffic rules, other public officials will likely do the same.
In the past, Nigeria has recorded deaths caused by the reckless of convoys conveying elected officials. See list of some of the deaths below:
In October 2009, the convoy of the Ondo state governor, Olusegun Mimiko was involved in fatal accident in which six people died.
On Friday, 28 December 2012, due to over-speeding, Kogi Governor, Idris Wada was involved in a fatal accident along Lokoja – Ajaokuta Road. His ADC, an assistant superintendent of police, ASP Idris Mohammed, died on the spot. The Governor escaped with minor fracture.
