Dr Prosper Igboeli, Managing Director of M and M Hospital, Fertility and IVF Centre, FCT, on Wednesday in Abuja advised couples to seek the services of a qualified doctor after one year of marriage without a child.

He said most couples waited for too long before seeking the services of a doctor, adding in the African context, any marriage that did not produce children, called for concern.

Igboeli said that in most societies, about six to 15 percent of couples were grappling with the problem of infertility.

The gyneacologist attributed the problem to the increase in cases of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) and the way some people lived their lives.

The doctor said most people hardly treated STDs properly, adding that the poverty level had forced some people into living lives of promiscuity.

The doctor added that abortions, when performed in unsterile environment or by quacks, could destroy the womb.

The expert said it would be easier to find solution for an infertile couple when they are in their 20s and 30s, rather than in their 40s and above, especially women.

He regretted that women were most often blamed because most families believed that only women should see the doctor on infertility issues.

He explained that the problem could be on either side or both, as such complete investigations should always be carried out to identify the cause.

He also advised doctors to provide enough information for couples with infertility problem, to enable them take informed decisions on how to manage the situation.
