The Syrian parliament has set June 3 as the date for the country’s presidential election.

The President of the Parliament, Jihad al-Laham, in Damascus on Monday said that nominations would open from Tuesday till May 1, while Syrians in the Diaspora would vote on May 28.

The parliament in March approved a new election law allowing multiple candidates to run for the first time.

The new law effectively excludes most prominent opposition figures as candidates are required to have lived for the previous 10 years in Syria but none was expected to take part in elections run by al-Assad's government.

In the circumstance, al-Assad is expected to be the only candidate.

A report says President Bashir al-Assad has insisted to run for a third seven-year term in spite of the opposition against his regime, insisting that he has no role to play in the country’s transition process.

The poll is expected to take place only in areas controlled by al-Assad's security forces with much of the country now held by fragmented rebel groups, including jihadists.
