- Sport as a physical activity is not the exclusive reserve for males, there are women who have distinguished themselves as wonderful athletes. It is not surprising that they earn more than the male folks in the sporting activity they are engaged in. Below are the top ten highest paid sports women in the world today.

1. Serena Williams (Tennis) Serena Williams may have been second best at the French Open on Saturday but the American has moved ahead of fellow tennis player Maria Sharapova to top the women's earnings list in sports, according to Forbes Magazine.
2. Maria Sharapova (Tennis) Russian tennis star Sharapova had held the No 1 slot for the past 11 years, until now. Sharapova dominated in endorsement profits before companies including Nike, American Express, Porsche and TAG Heuer distanced themselves after she tested positive for the recently banned drug meldonium earlier this year. Sharapova has earned £15 million over the past 12 months, down almost £5.5 million from the previous year.
3. Ronda Rousey (MMA) American mixed martial arts star Rousey has earned £9.6 million over the past year, despite suffering a stunning loss to Holly Holm in November -her first defeat after 12 wins in MMA. Rousey has crossed over into mainstream celebrity with movie roles, SI Swimsuit appearances, hosting Saturday Night Live and endorsement deals with Reebok, MetroPCS, Bud Light, Buffalo Jeans and Fanatics.
4. Danica Patrick (motorsport) With £9.5 million earned in the past 12 months, Patrick is one of only two non-tennis players in the Top 10. She is sponsored by brands like Chevrolet, Coca-Cola, Nationwide and Tissot. Patrick's 73 per cent awareness level ranks third among female athletes behind only the Williams sisters.
5.Angieszka Radwanska (tennis) The world's No 2-ranked player won three events last year, including the WTA Final. The wins and ranking triggered lucrative bonuses for the Polish star, enabling her to earn £7 million in the last year. Her endorsement partners include Lotto, Babolat, Lexus, Workday, Rado and Amica. Her £15.8 million in career prize money ranks sixth all-time.
6. Caroline Wozniacki (tennis) The former world No 1 has seen her ranking plummet over the past 12 months to No 34. However, Adidas remains her most lucrative endorsement partner, meaning she has raked in £5.5 million in the past 12 months.
7. Garbine Murguruza (tennis) The Venezuelan-born Spaniard broke through at the French Open recently with her first Grand Slam win. Muguruza finished second in WTA prize money in 2015, helping her to amass £5.2 million in earnings over the last year. Her French Open win is worth £1.6 million in prize money and lucrative bonuses from sponsors like Adidas.
8. Ana Ivanovic (tennis) The Serb has failed to get past the third round of her last four Grand Slam events and her ranking has fallen to No 16. However, Ivanovic renewed her deal with Dubai Duty Free last year, and added a new partner in Shiseido, to help earn £5 million for the year.
9. Victoria Azarenka (tennis) Azarenka's ranking had plummeted to No 50 in the world after her 2014 season ended early due to injury. However, with partners that include Nike, Wilson, Citizen and Esurance, she has still managed to bring in £4.5 million over the year.
10. Eugenie Bouchard (tennis) Bouchard was being touted as the next big thing after her run to the 2014 Wimbledon final. Injuries and a drop in form have meant she has failed to kick on but new deals with Nike, Usana and Rolex mean she has still managed to earn £4.3 million in the past 12 months.
