Almost every part of Nigeria is a delight to visit, and they are all rich in traditional heritage and picturesque vistas that keep tourists fascinated with the idea of returning again and again. The eastern part of Nigeria is not left out of these tourist attractions, and you are about to take a ride to where you might camp out when next you find yourself in eastern Nigeria.
i. Ibeno Beach
I bet you’ve never heard of Ibeno Beach, have you? Anyway, it is located in Akwa Ibom State and extends from James town to the Atlantic Ocean. The beach is one of the best in eastern Nigeria and thousands of picnickers flock their every day to enjoy a dive in the ocean before spreading out on the white beach sands. There is also the Ibeno Soccer Tournament that takes place at a suitable venue along the beach.
ii. Chief Nana’s Palace
Chief Nana Olomu Ebrohimi was a popular and prosperous man in the early 19th century and he traded with European companies and related with administrators of the British Empire. He also had some contact with Queen Elizabeth II and the monument of his palace is a testimony to this. Chief Nana’ Palace is located in Koko, Warri-North LGA of Delta State, and it is now a national monument with a lot of artefacts and antiquities to see.
iii. Okomu Wildlife Sanctuary
Situated in Benin City, Edo State, the Okomu Wildlife Sanctuary is the second largest forest reserve in Nigeria and hosts a lot of exotic animals among which are chimpanzees, porcupines, duikers, buffalo, elephants, bushbaby, the putty nosed guenon, horn bills, red river hog, white-throated monkey, and the mona monkey among others.
iv. National War Museum, Umuahia
The National War Museum is located in Umuahia, and is composed of three sectional galleries. There is the Armed Forces gallery, the Civil War gallery, and the traditional warfare gallery. You can see local ammunitions manufactured by Biafran soldiers during the Nigerian Civil War between Gen. Yakubu Gowon of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Lt. ChukwuemekaOdumegwuOjukwu of Biafra Republic. At the museum, you will see war artefacts like rocket launchers, the Ojukwu bucket, armoured vehicles, and the Ogbunigwe.
v. Slave Masters Lodge, Okopedi, Itu
Itu is a small town in Uyo, Cross River State where captured slaves were kept pending transportation to overseas countries. The detention centers are along the Itu River, and here you also see the white slave masters lodge where slave merchants lodged until they shipped their slaves.
vi. Ogbunike Cave
The Ogbunike Cave is located in Oyi LGA of Anambra State and is listed as a UNESCO Heritage Site, given its spiritual and historical significance to the people in the eastern region of Nigeria. The caves are fun to explore with the help of a guide or yourself, and you can use the 317 steps that descend down to the inner caves. It is a great tourist center that continues to hold visitors spell-bound by its magical formations.
vii. Oban Hills, Cross River State
The Oban Hills in Cross River State shares a border with the Korup National Park of Cameroon, and it is a vast home to exotic plants and fascinating wildlife. There are over 400 chimps in the wild here, and you also get to see the crested guinea fowl, the Cassin’s Hawk eagle, the Bat hawk, the Xavier’s green bull among others. It is a great tourist attraction if you can make out time to visit today.
viii. The Tinapa Free Zone and Resort
Located in Calabar, Cross River State, the Tinapa Free Zone and Resort presents an enchanting work of modern recreation that can only be found in developed cities like Orlando, Florida. It is situated on 860,000 square feet of land, and you can explore the rich amusement parks for family vacations and other holiday or recreational purposes. There is a small amphitheater here, a casino, a night club and pubs, restaurants, a digital cinema at an entertainment center, and then the Studio Tinapa for Nollywood actors and filming.
ix. Isaac Boro Garden Park
Located across the Mile One Bridge along the old GRA in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, the Isaac Boro Garden Park is built in memory of Isaac Boro – a journalist and human rights activist from the area. He was also a soldier and died in the Nigerian Civil War. The tomb of this hero is located within the park, and there are baseball and softball facilities for entertainment purposes. Organizations can also hold trade fairs at the garden park and musicians can hold live concerts there too.
x. Ngwo Pine Forest
The Ngwo Pine Forest is located in Ngwo, Enugu State and it is a natural vegetation of sprawling pine trees that any tourist would find beautiful. There is a cave in the inner recesses of the pine forest and there is a stream for people to just sit by and have a soul discussion. The pine forest is great for adventure and continues to attract visitors all the year round.
