Sports lovers have the tendency of relying on sporting facilities for their training and delights. Active sports enthusiasts require quality sporting facilities for the physical exertion that their competitions require, and this informs the need to outline some of the best sporting facilities across the states in Nigeria. While it is agreed that most sporting facilities are falling into disrepair in the country, many still live up to their expectations and some of these will be highlighted herein.
1. Fluidra’s swimming pools
Fluidra’s swimming pools were provided by Fluidra, a multinational water group based in Spain, for the National Sports Festival through its sales subsidiary, Astral Export. The international quality swimming pools would be used for the 17th National Sports Festival held in Port Harcourt and have since become a delight of sports lovers who love swimming. Made of hot-galvanized steel panels to enable above-ground and in-ground pools of all sizes, the pools were completed for a total value of 830,000 euros. The olympic swimming pool is a Skypool pool of 50 metres long, 25 metres wide and 2 metres deep. The pool that will be used for the diving competitions is 25 metres long, 15 metres wide and 4 metres deep.
2. Yankari Games Resort and Safari
The management of the Yankari Games Resort and Safari in Bauchi State have commenced building an international standard sporting facility at the reserve after the Nigeria Olympic Committee held its meeting at the reserve last December and advised for the change. Sports lovers will not be able to enjoy quality indoor sporting facilities and a modern golf course as well as a tartan track and other camping facilities at the resort. Considering that the games reserve has a natural warm water spring, well-equipped hostels, and 24-hour uninterrupted power supply, sports lovers will enjoy visiting the resort for quality sporting activities in time to come.
3. University of Benin sports centre
If you are a sports lover and based anywhere in Edo State, then you can enjoy quality sporting events at the University of Benin sports centre where you stand to enjoy a 400-metre tartan track with 8 lanes, 50-metres swimming pool, 8 lanes natural grass and syntactic/Astroturf football pitches, two basketball court, tennis courts, handball and volleyball courts, modern indoor sports hall for combat sports, badminton, table tennis, and facilities for taekwondo and lawn tennis among others.
4. National Institute of Sports Centre
The National Institute of Sports Centre is located at the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, and at the National Museum Centre in Onikan, Lagos. This is a social-family club that offers avenue to enjoy relaxation and recreational facilities in the most conducive environment. It must however be pointed out that membership of the club is restricted to registration. Located at the Victoria Garden City in Lekki, Lagos, sports lovers can enjoy sporting events at the body fitness facility, indoor sporting facilities, outdoor sports, music and sports shop, and massage and spa needs.
6. National Stadium, Abuja
The National Stadium in Abuja or the Abuja National Stadium is an all-seater national sports stadium that serves as the home to the Nigerian national football team, as well as a centre for various social, cultural, and religious events. Constructed to host the 8th All Africa Games which held in October 2003, the 60,491 seater is an ultra-modern multipurpose sports complex. The stadium consists of a 60,491 capacity covered main bowl, presidential suite and viewing area, 56 corporate suites, modern turnstiles, box office, post offices, banks, media facilities, two scoreboards and floodlights, shops and kiosks for snacks, standby power supply system, helipad, a 3,000 capacity indoor sports hall, a 2,000 capacity gymnasium, a 2,000 capacity swimming pool, an artificial lake, tennis court, a 3,000 capacity hockey stadium, a 400 capacity VIP car park, a 4,000 vehicle capacity public parking lot, and a baseball and softball complex.
