Ayo Fayose, former Ekiti State governor, advises Atiku Abubakar to refrain from future presidential runs after six unsuccessful attempts. Fayose emphasizes the need for younger leadership in Nigeria and criticizes the current state of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), highlighting Peter Obi’s rise as a prominent opposition figure.
Ayo Fayose, the former governor of Ekiti State, has urged Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President of Nigeria, to refrain from running in future elections. Atiku, who is 77 years old, has attempted to secure the presidency six times without success, including in the most recent 2023 election. During an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Fayose expressed the belief that the prospect of running for president may no longer excite Atiku, especially as he approaches 80 in the next election cycle. He emphasized that Nigerians are now seeking younger leaders and suggested it might be wise for Atiku to step back when he is still respected.
Fayose also addressed the current state of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), asserting that its foundational structures have eroded. He highlighted that Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s candidate in the 2023 elections, has become a significant voice in the opposition against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Fayose lamented the PDP's struggle to stay relevant politically, noting that internal disputes are hindering the party's efforts to challenge the APC effectively.
Despite Fayose’s advice, Atiku remains determined to pursue his political ambitions. In a recent interview with Voice of America Hausa, he stated that he would continue to run as long as he has the strength, health, and longevity granted by God. Drawing parallels with Abraham Lincoln, who famously ran multiple times before achieving victory, Atiku maintains his optimism about the future of his political career.
