Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has hinted at a potential presidential run but expressed a willingness to step aside if former President Goodluck Jonathan decides to contest. Speaking on Thursday after being urged by a non-governmental organization to consider a bid for Nigeria's highest office, Mohammed emphasized Jonathan’s leadership qualities and experience.
Mohammed acknowledged the presence of capable leaders within the People's Democratic Party (PDP), specifically praising Jonathan's past contributions to the nation. He noted that Jonathan’s tenure was marked by inclusive governance, citing initiatives like the Almajiri educational program and efforts to address youth unemployment as examples of his impactful leadership.
Reflecting on the challenges facing Nigeria today, Mohammed highlighted the rising inflation and economic struggles, arguing that Jonathan's experience and leadership style could better navigate the country through its current difficulties. He expressed his deep respect for Jonathan, stating that he would fully support the former president’s candidacy if he chose to run, even vowing to back him "with my blood."
However, Mohammed also pointed out that Jonathan has yet to express a firm interest in returning to the political arena. He encouraged the NGO and others to persuade Jonathan to consider a comeback, suggesting that his return could be beneficial for the nation.
The governor also defended his critiques of the current administration under President Bola Tinubu, framing them as part of his duty to ensure Nigeria remains on a progressive path. Mohammed reiterated his commitment to advocating for what he believes is best for the country.
