Zambian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Stanley Kakubo, resigned on Wednesday following the emergence of a video showing him accepting a $200,000 cash bribe and a luxury Mercedes-Benz from Chinese contractors.
The video, reportedly filmed in 2022, revealed Kakubo's promise to sell valuable mineral mines to Chinese businessmen, a commitment he failed to fulfill.
Kakubo cited a desire to prevent controversy from distracting President Hakainde Hichilema's administration as the reason for his resignation.
The president promptly accepted his resignation while acknowledging Kakubo's contributions. The incident highlights the pervasiveness of bribery in African politics, drawing parallels with similar scandals in Ghana and Nigeria in recent years.
