Kidnapping is one of the major problems being experienced in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Kidnapping is abducting and holding anybody captive, typically to obtain ransom. Sometimes kidnappers hold their captives longer in order to demand more from the relatives of the victim.
In 2016 alone, Nigeria has witnessed more than five high profile kidnapping cases in the country. One of which is recent case of the wife of Central Bank of Nigeria, Mrs. Margaret Emefiele which a security chief described as shocking and shame to the nation.

CBN Governor's Wife, Mrs. Margaret Emefiele
A group of heavily armed kidnappers On Thursday, September 29th, 2016 abducted Margaret Emefiele, the wife of Nigeria’s Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele along the Benin-Agbor Road.
She regained freedom two days after intense search by the Nigerian security agencies.
Lagos monarch, Oba Oniba of Ibaland – Oba Yushau Oseni
Gunmen abducted the first class traditional ruler in Lagos, Oba Yushau Goriola Oseni, the Oniba of Ibaland, killed his guard and shot his wife on July 16th, 2016.
The gunmen, suspected to be from Niger Delta, stormed the monarch’s palace at Iba area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria around 11:30pm on Saturday and took the monarch away, escaping through the waterways.
Rev. Father John Adeyi
Reverend Father John Adeyi was kidnapped on April 24 2016. Despite an outrage over his kidnapping both locally and internationally, Father Adeyi’s decomposed body was found in a bush at Odoba village in Otukpo area of Benue state.
The kidnappers of the catholic priest killed him in cold blood, despite receiving about N2 million from his family members.
Osun State Permanent Secretary – Mrs Adebimpe Ogunlumade
The Permanent Secretary of Osun State Ministry of Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, Mrs Adebimpe Ogunlumade was abducted by gunmen while returning to Osogbo from Abuja on April 21, 2016.
Adebimpe Ogunlumade, the Permanent Secretary of Osun State Ministry of Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, was kidnapped on Friday alongside her driver, Oladapo Ajani, and a director from the ministry, Tajudeen Badejoko.
They were however released two days after.
Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) – Pastor Bajomo
The pastor at the parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) at Santos bus stop, Isawo, Ikorodu was abducted by gunmen on July 24th, 2016.
The Pastor, Identified only as Bajomo was kidnapped by the gunmen who came to church as new members.
Samson Siasia's Mother - Madam Beauty Siasia
Madam Ogere Siasia was abducted from her house in Odoni village, Saghama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State on November 16, 2015.
The septuagenarian who was forcibly taken away on a motorcycle was rescued along the East-West road by men of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Bayelsa State Police command where she was abandoned by her captors exactly twelve days after.
Olu Falae
The former Finance Minister, Olu Falae was kidnapped by six Fulani herdsmen at his Ilado home in Akure, Ondo state on September 21, 2015.
He was released after an undisclosed amount of ransom was paid by his family; the kidnappers initially asked for N100 million but later reduced it to N90 million.
- Nigerian Ex-Senator – Patrick Ani
A Third Republic Senator, Mr. Patrick Ani, was kidnapped on July 8th 2016.
Ani who represented Cross River South senatorial district on the platform of the defunct National Republican Convention (NRC) between 1992 and 1994, was kidnapped in his farm in Akpabuyo, near Calabar.
He eventually regained his freedom from kidnappers' den, 13 days after he was abducted.
- Princess Toyin Omosowon, the regent of Akungba-Akoko in Ondo State
The regent of Akungba Akoko in Ondo State, Princess Toyin Omosowon, was kidnapped on June 5, 2015.
She was kidnapped along Akure/Akungba-Akoko Express road while returning to the palace after attending an inaugural lecture by the Vice Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Professor Igbekele Ajibefun.
She was freed two weeks after by the joint effort of security agencies; no amount was disclosed as payment for ransom.
- Professor James Adiche
The father of a popular Nigerian author Chimamanda Adiche, Professor James Adiche was abducted on May 2nd, 2015.
An undisclosed amount of money was paid to the kidnappers before Prof. Adiche was freed. It was reported that the kidnappers initially asked for N50 million, but later agreed to a lower amount.
