President Mohammadu Buhari, on Tuesday, 21 June, 2016 appointed Mr. Ibrahim Kpotun Idris as the new Inspector General of Police.

The new police chief replaced the retired Inspector of Police, Solomon Arase.

Mr. Idris, in his inaugural speech stated that “the Nigeria Police Force will henceforth be guided by the international core values of policing with integrity, ensuring that the rule of law prevails in our actions and activities, and to strictly respect diversity, courage, compassion and professionalism. The Nigeria Police also would operate within the principles of democratic policing which is an institution that is responsive, representative and accountable to its citizens at all times.”

Mr Idris' appointment is coming at a time when the nation is faced with heated polity, brutal attacks, kidnappings, among other societal vices.

Looking at these issues around us, below are 11 things Nigerians demand from the new police chief.

-----
1. A Responsive Police Force: Nigerians want a responsive Police institution that will work according to international ethics and treat complaints from members of the public within the shortest possible time to the satisfaction of the complainant. There have been cases where police complain of 'no fuel' or flat tyres' when they are alerted for a quick intervention.

2. A Strengthened Police Force: Nigerians want a strengthened Police force that will be able to fight corruption amongst civil servants, among cadre of officers in the force and in the society.

3. Incessant Cases of Kidnapping: We've had cases of kidnap of top government officials by hoodlums. Nigerians want the new Inspector General Police step up battle in the case of kidnappings and highway robbery across the country.

4. Corruption, Irregularities: Corruption and irregularities among police officials have become order of the day, the new Inspector General of Police is expected to set up a powerful monitoring team that would be able to police the police and act without bias or favour.

5. Biafra and Agitators: Nigerians expect Mr. Idris to act in consonance to the letters and spirit of the constitution and Police Act to face the Biafra agitators by striking a balance between agitators, people and the government.

6. Police Recruitment: Nigerians demand that the new police boss oversee the recruitment process of the Police commission against illicit demands and manipulation.

7. Rivers State Killings and Kidnappings: Nigerians demand that the new police chief step into Rivers killings and kidnappings which have marred different elections in the state and how it has deterred INEC to go ahead and reschedule inconclusive elections.

8. Fulani Herdsmen Attacks: Nigerians demand that the Police step up the game with the brutal killings of local residents and farmers by suspected Fulani herdsmen and cattle rustlers.

9. Niger Delta Agitation and Pipeline Vandalism: The nation has recently seen several blow- ups of oil pipelines by militant groups in the Niger Delta region. Nigerians charge the new police chief to ensure collaborative effort of the Nigerian Police Force with other security agencies.

10. Police Brutality: Men of the Nigerian Police Force have always exhibited brutal and excessive use of force on innocent citizens. The Nigerian populace demands sanity, dignity and respect from the newly appointed police boss.

11. Happy-Trigger-Police and Accidental Discharge: This is a very serious issue in many Nigeria metro cities, with indiscriminate shooting by men of the Police force. Happy-trigger policemen who guise under 'accidental discharge' of bullets should be removed from the system, and recruits should be well-trained in the art of policing.
