Ahead of the 2015 general elections, the #UnityPartyofNigeria (UPN) said on Tuesday that the party was scouting for a credible presidential candidate to dethrone the #PDP.

The National Chairman of the party, Dr Frederick Fasehun, made this known in an interview in Abuja.

Fasehun said that the candidate must be a patriotic, selfless and committed individual that would make the country great.

"The need to convince the electorate on our (UPN’s) genuine desire to improve the welfare of all Nigerians above parochial and selfish interests informed our resolve to field a credible presidential candidate for 2015 poll.

"The criteria is for the presidential candidate to solve the socio-economic problems confronting the nation. A detribalised and highly committed leader with impecable administrative skills are the least of qualities that will be found in our candidates at all levels, and the Presidential candidate will not be an exception," he said.

Fasehun urged UPN members to remain committed and courageous to take over the political leadership of the country in upcoming elections.

"We shall not only rely on the labour of our heroes past but shall galvanism their ideals and programmes as a spring board to launch Nigeria into the era of a new nation. UPN has emerged to become a catalyst for a great future that will be free from insecurity, unemployment and illiteracy," he said.

The chairman commended INEC for registering the party, saying the commission would soon realize that the registration is a favour to the Nigerians.

Fasehun pledged the party’s commitment to provide free education, free medical services, integrated rural/urban/industrial development, full employment and exemplary stewardship at all levels of governance.

On the establishment of party structures across the country, he said members of the National Executive Committee in each state would constitute caretaker committees.

#UPN was registered in April bringing the number of parties in the country to 26.
