Operators of film shops in Abuja have rated foreign movies higher than local movies, popularly called home video.

A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who visited some
films shops on Thursday in Abuja, quoted the operators as saying that
their customers prefer to watch foreign movies on the ground that they are more inspiring and unpredictable.

Mr Kenneth Madu, the operator of Innocent and Sons’ Film shop in
Lugbe, said about 90 per cent of his customers were of the view that
foreign movies were better.

"I sell foreign movies more than home videos; they are my main source of income and customers pick them on arrival."

"My customers always say they do not learn anything from watching
home videos; they say foreign films are more inspiring."

"Most of my customers are excited when they see new foreign movies in
my shop," he said.

Mr Yinka Sule, the proprietor of Suleman Films Shop also in Lugbe,
told NAN that majority of his customers prefer to watch serial movies.

"Majority of my customers have told me on several occasions that they
prefer to watch serial movies to ordinary films because they last
longer and are more interesting and easy to follow."

"They call to tell me the type of movies I should buy whenever I go
to the market to stuff my shop."

"People rarely buy home videos and for that reason I do not sell
local films in my shop," he said.

Sule explained that foreign movies sell more because their producers
take time to produce them unlike their Nigerian counterparts who
produce home videos in less than one month.

Mr Anthony Okechukwu who operates Lucy Films and Video Club in Wuse, said he sells more than 300 copies of foreign movies every day.

"I sell more than 300 copies of foreign movies everyday and less than 20 copies of home videos; you can see that the difference is much,"
he said.

Okechukwu pointed out that most foreign films were unpredictable and
full of suspense in contrast to home videos which in most cases were
repetitions of the work of other producers.

"Foreign films are usually full of actions while local films are
not," Okechukwu said.
