Okpara Michael, a 23 year-old rape suspect from Oyi LGA in Anambra state on Wednesday escaped from court during his arraignment.
The News Agency of Nigeria said Michael was arrested for kidnapping a minor, keeping her in a nondescript building and raping her several times.
As his trial was about to begin on Wednesday, his handcuffs were removed and he utilized the opportunity to abscond. He broke free, destroyed the louvres of a nearby window, jumped through it into a nearby bush and made away.
“The accused was brought to the court in handcuff, but the handcuff was later unlocked with the hope that he will be of good behaviour before the unexpected happened,” someone present in the courtroom said.
The Magistrate N.A. Onunkwo, mandated the police to intensify search for the suspect to be brought to book.
