Enugu State Governor, Sullivan Chime, yesterday said some members of the state House of Assembly wanted to impeach him because he refused to meet their financial demands as condition for approving his request for a N11 billion loan.

Governor Chime who spoke with newsmen at the Government House, Enugu described all the allegations made by the lawmakers against him as baseless lies borne out of malice and mischief.

He said contrary to claims orchestrated by the legislators led by the “impeached” speaker, Eugene Odo, the assembly had actually approved the N11 billion loan in November 2014 and conveyed the approval to him in a letter.

Chime said the members started demanding gratification from when the participating bank required further assurances on the mode of repayment as agreed with the government. He added that he had promptly rejected the lawmakers’ request, telling them that “As an old lawyer and after eight years as governor without blemish, I cannot turn around and engage in an illegality just a few months before the end of my tenure and that was where the problem started”, he said.
