Politics Confab Approves Compulsory Debates for Presidential and Governorship Candidates, Senate Rejects It

A few hours ago, The Sun newspaper reported that the National Conference delegates had approved the "recommendation that makes it mandatory for all candidates, seeking election to the office of President, Vice President, Governor, Deputy Governor or such other office, as may be deemed appropriate to participate or attend political debates."

However, The Nation has now carried a story stating that the House of Senate has rejected the proposal: "The rejection of presidential debates was contained in the report of the Senate Committees on the Review of the 1999 Constitution and the INEC entitled: “A Bill for an Act to amend the Electoral Act, 2010 to provide for tenure of office of Secretary, power to issue duplicate voters card, determine voting procedure and for other related matters, 2014″ which was presented by Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba, at plenary."
