Gambian military troops have pull back from strategic checkpoints in Banjul, the country's capital.

According to Sahara Reporters, some of the troops also fled after declining to fight ECOWAS forces

Gambian Army Chief had previously ordered his men not to engage ECOWAS force.

“We are not going to involve ourselves militarily. This is a political dispute,” Chief of Defence Staff Ousman Badjie had said.

President Yahaya Jammeh had refused to leave office after losing December's election to Adama Barrow of the opposition party.

ECOWAS had given him midnight to step aside or risk invasion by military forces.
