The Federal Government on Wednesday inaugurated the Widows Empowerment Scheme with a strong commitment to address the plight of widows in Nigeria and to ensure their integration into national transformation processes.
At the launch of the programme in Abuja, the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Zainab Maina, said that the government was committed to ensuring a better deal for widows and that all stakeholders must ensure that widows' vulnerability, issues and concerns were not only positively addressed, but must also enjoy the rights and social protection they deserved.
She also commended MTN Foundation for its partnership with the ministry for the successful take-off of the scheme.
The highlight of the event was the distribution of economic empowerment equipment, machines and materials to the beneficiaries of the first batch of the scheme who promised to use the equipment to improve their lives.
