A professor at the University of California, Rainer Reinscheid who set fire at his son's high school, a school administrator's home and a nearby park after his son committed suicide said he committed the actions out of grief.
He has pleaded guilty to six counts of arson, three counts of attempted arson and resisting or obstructing an officer.
He said he had lost himself in grief and begged the judge for a lenient sentence yesterday.
His 14-year-old son hanged himself last year after he was disciplined by a school administrator for allegedly stealing from the school store.
His private emails described a graphic plan to attack the boy's school and kill students.
The hearing will continue on this afternoon.
