John Obi Mikel's father,Pa Michael Obi is upbeat that the President of Confederation of African Football(CAF) Issa Hayatou masterminded his son not being named African footballer of the year.
Manchester City and Ivory Coast midfielder Yaya Toure, was on January 9 named the 2013 African player of the year, winning the award for a third consecutive time.
Many felt Mikel would win the award after having a successful year, winning the the 2013 African Nations Cup with the Super Eagles.
Mikel's father who was unhappy that his son didn't win, said that many people were eagerly waiting to congratulate him should his son have been declared winner.
Pa Obi went on to state that his son lost because Hayatou seems to have “a dislike” for footballers from the Anglophone countries.
“We know that it was he, Isa Hayatou (CAF President), that denied him that award. Yahaha (Yahaya Toure, the eventual winner) himself said so that his friend is worthy to take the award,” Pa Obi told The Punch.
Mikel placed second behind Toure at the awards, with Didier Drogba coming in third.
