UN Secretary Ban Ki-moon has asked President Abdel-Fatah el-Sisi of Egypt to fully guarantee the protection of the freedom of expression for journalists in his country.
Ban, who attended the two-day summit of the AU in Malabo, told journalists that he had raised issues regarding press freedom in Egypt during a meeting with the President.
``I have been urging all the countries, including Egypt, to allow the freedom of movement, the freedom of expression and the freedom of coverage of news for journalists.
"I met Sisi today in Malabo and I also discussed this matter with him. I urged him to fully guarantee the protection of the freedom of expression for journalists
Ban said that freedom of the press was one of the basic aspects of human rights and one of the basic principles of democracy.
His comments follow the June 23 verdict of an Egypt court which sentenced two Al Jazeera journalists to seven years and one to 10 years in prison.
