The #Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) says it sealed off 18 companies in April for failing to remit N56 million personal income tax to the coffers of the government.
The Head of Distrain Unit of the agency, Mrs Folasade Coker-Afolayan, disclosed this to newsmen on Saturday in Lagos.
She said the unremitted taxes were for a period ranging from one year to four.
Coker-Afolayan, who noted that tax was the responsibility of citizens, said the government needed funds to provide infrastructure for the people.
"Tax is a major source of revenue for the government. It enables it to provide infrastructure and improve citizens’ standard of living,” she said.
Coker-Afolayan said the LIRS would continue to sanction tax defaulters. She chided some employers of labour, who were fond of deducting workers’ taxes and failing to remit them into the government’s coffers.
Coker-Afolayan advised companies to remit taxes promptly to avoid embarrassment and also cautioned against tampering with government's seal on defaulting companies.
#LIRS sealed a total of 72 companies in the first quarter of the year for failing to remit N552.6 million income tax to the state government.
