A man has fallen to his death from a Welsh clifftop while trying to save his new puppy.
The Daily Mail reported that Rhys Clark, 27, and his girlfriend Ania, 25, were taking his new rescue puppy Sherlock for a walk along the cliffs in Wales when the puppy tumbled over the edge of the 46-metre cliff and landed on a ledge three metres below.
When Ania and Rhys tried to climb down to grab the dog, they all slipped and fell to the beach below.
Rhys and the dog were killed, but Ania amazingly survived, breaking her pelvis and a leg in the process. She is currently recovering in a hospital.
Rhys' mother Janet Clarke said he had always wanted a rescue puppy, and was fond of walks on the scenic clifftops.
"My son would still be here if it wasn’t for the dog but I can’t look at it like that," she said.
"I had the most wonderful son, I don’t know what I’m going to do without him. I just hope he didn’t suffer."
She said her son, who was a mechanical engineer and Ania, a phD student from Poland, had plans to settle down and marry.
South Wales Police considered the fall a tragic accident which will be investigated by the coroner.
