It was a dream return for Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge, overseeing Chelsea in their 2-0 defeat of Hull City.
Frank Lampard had an opportunity to get Chelsea in front after just five minutes, with McGregor coming off his lines and hitting Fernando Torres with his fist to give away a penalty.
But McGregor saved his blushes, going down nicely to save a ferocious Lampard’s shot than the middle, keeping the ball out.
Hull’s honeymoon didn’t last long and Chelsea got the lead through Oscar, after Kevin De Bruyne played him through on goal,to slot the ball past the onrushing keeper.
Chelsea extended their lead in the 25th minute with Lampard making amends for his earlier penalty miss, belting a freekick past Hull’s wall and straight into the net for 2-0.
There was a contentious issue just before the break when Branislav Ivanovic’s header appeared to have crossed the line, but it was not given as a goal, despite the presence of goal-line technology.
Hull came back better in the second half and restricted Chelsea from adding to their tally.
Steve Bruce’s team were more disciplined and tried probing Chelsea’s back four, but there was no penetration.
André Schürrle had an opportunity of making it 3-0,and his looping shot was just inches over the bar.
With various banners and posters welcoming Mourinho back at Chelsea,he would be delighted that he gave the fans something to cheer about.
However he will still worry about his strike-force after seeing his side have twenty-three shots but only six on target.
Maybe the chase of Wayne Rooney will intensify or they will focus their energy on landing Samuel Eto’o.
