The Chairperson of Women and Child Watch Initiatives (WOCWI) Mrs Biola Adimula, on Monday, promised to help improve the vocabulary of students in Kwara state through spelling bee competitions.

Adimula said this at the grand finale of Great Kwara Spelling Bee Competition which comprised 400 contestants from secondary schools across the 16 local government areas of the state.

According to her, performance of public schools in the competition had improved to 30 per cent since the takeoff of the programme in 2010.

The competition is expected to instill the art of reading in students, improve the students' spellings and help them attain higher scores in essays and other tests in English language.

Adimula decried the advent of modern technologies especially the use of short forms in SMS messages which has seeped into the school curriculum and also into examinations.

Mrs Omolewa Ahmed, Kwara Governor’s wife represented by Mrs Bukola Akinloye, said her pet project, Life Empowerment Anchors Hope (LEAH) charity, had partnered with WOCWI to promote the competition.

Ahmed, the Head Administrator of Leah, said that the state government had sponsored 10 finalists of the 2012 competition on international trips.

Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, the Vice-Chancellor, University of Ilorin, also commended the initiative. According to him, English speaking and writing is the basic instrument of communication which students must have knowledge of.

Union Baptist Grammar School and Federal Staff Secondary School, Ilorin won the first and second prizes respectively with laptops and other prizes in this year's competition.
