The BBC has outlined the journey to the top of Nigeria's President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, who started out as a shoeless village boy to become a modern-day grass-to-grace phenomenon of remarkable proportions. Adding his success story to his riding on the back of Nigeria's strongest political machine, Jonathan is supposed to be formidable and unbeatable as far as his re-election is concerned.
The ruling party raked in 22 million (as compared with Buhari's 12 million in the CPC) votes in the last election, but now that feat is almost certainly impossible to duplicate in the light of PDP's lack-lustre performance and President Jonathan's less-than-inspiring presidency.
For the past 16 years, the PDP machine chugged enthusiastically, winning every battle, conquering every opposition, a track record that inspired the former party chairman, Vincent Ogbulafor, in 2008, to say that the party would rule the country for "not less than 60 years".
The glamor has faded in four years, says BBC, all thanks to the Jonathanian administration.
