The group managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Maikanti Baru, has opened up about the recent scarcity of petroleum products in the country.

According to him, the fuel situation came about as private companies are unable to import due to higher landing costs and exchange rate, while NNPC is the sole importer in the country.

"Our findings reveal that the situation was further worsened by rumours of purported price increase leading to panic buying as a result of hoarding and diversion by marketers who want to cash in on the unfortunate situation brought the initial situation under control before it was rekindled by PENGASSAN's threat to embark on strike which unfortunately was also called off long after people have developed fear of return to the queues

"Consequently, NNPC has instructed a 24-hour loading operations which commenced at all its depots and mega stations across the country.

"The major marketers were also advised to carry out 24-hour operations. Most of them have been complying. This has significantly increased loadout from the depots and ensured continuos service in the stations nationwide."

"NNPC has also activated its 'Fuel War Room' to coodinate all intervention activities for Supply & Distribution (S & D) of PMS nationwide. The team comprises of officials from the Corporation's S & D team,DPR, PPPRA and PEF, with the support of security agencies

"I appeal to all Nigerians to bear with us as our 'Fuel War Room' team are working round the clock to ensure a steady resolution of the current situation."
