National chairman of Labour Party, Chief Dan Nwanyanwu, yesterday in Abuja reportedly announced his decision to leave his seat as the chairman of the party at the National Working Committee (NWC) meeting of the party held at its national secretariat.

Nwanyanwu, who has been holding the position since 2004 and has completed two terms, told the NWC members that he was quitting in order to make way for others to build from where he stopped.

He was said to delivered what appeared to be his valedictory speech during the NWC meeting, informing other national officials about his intention to quit office and to allow his successor to emerge during the party’s convention scheduled for next month.

DAILY TIME's source said some party stakeholders have tried to make him change his mind - "many of us would want him to continue in office. There has been pressures from stakeholders for him not quit but to stay further since the constitution does not provide any limit or tenure for the office of the chairman. No doubt his tenure has helped to build the party to a great heights,"

But despite the pressure on him to stay he stood by his decision which according to the source may not be unconnected with the defection of the Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko who was his most trusted allies in the party to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
