Senator Babafemi Ojudu, who is representing Ekiti Central at the National Assembly, drew the attention of his colleagues to what he called disturbing repetitions and unjustifiable spending proposals in the 2014 Appropriation Bill. Speaking to the Sunday Trust on his claims, Sen Ojudu lampooned what he described the irresponsiveness, corruption and impunity that now attends the preparation of the Nigerian budget. Excerpts:
The Senate has been deliberating on the 2014 Appropriation proposals with declarations from some senators that suggest all is not well with the document. You particularly spoke of some disturbing repetitions. Could you explain what your worries are?
Budgets, at whether the government or private level, are statements of how you intend to spend your resources to bring about development in whether the life of a country or in your personal life. Whatever you dedicate your resources to is meant to move you from Point A to Point B. If, at worst, your budget won’t make you static, it should, at least, not make you regress. That is what your budget is meant to be, what it is meant to do for you.
In the past, even under military regimes, Nigerians always waited anxiously for the budget. Then, budget presentation was like a national festival or a ceremony which presentation date the people always looked to forward to. They knew the annual budget always addressed a number of things and would provide solutions to a number of problems.
