Ijaw Chieftain, Edwin Clark said that corruption in Nigeria started in the first republic; THIS DAY reports.
Clark who said that President Goodluck Jonathan did not start corruption in Nigeria, accused Former President Olusegun Obasanjo of promoting corruption during his administration by corrupting the national assembly.
Speaking during an interview session on Rock City 101.9 FM, monitored by THIS DAY, Clark said, ''Sometimes when you talk about corruption I sit down and laugh. In this country, it is the corrupt people that are shouting corruption. There was corruption in the first republic, although not very much pronounced. In the second republic, it started building up. All the military regimes, except that of Gen. Gowon. He was not corrupt, he did not even have a bungalow when he left office after nine years. But every other head of state, military wise, has acquired so much. For instance, from 1999-2007, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo’s era, corruption grew from strength to strength starting with him. When he left Gashua prisons, he had not more than N20,000.
''Even in his first term, he had not much money but corruption was building up. It was Obasanjo who corrupted the National Assembly with Ghana must go, when it was laid at the floor of the assembly. He was the one who guided them. Everyone of them received N50m in the senate, they received money from him to beg them for his third-term bid, but they rejected it. Is it not the same Obasanjo that is now calling them “armed-robbers.” Obasanjo sold almost every property of government, institution of government, except Aso Rock and had heavy share in almost all of them, himself and El-Rufai sold all the property of FCT, running into billions of naira that was never accounted for.
''What about the case of Halliburton which his aide has been charged for. All those involved in that case in the US had been charged, jailed or fined, but in Nigeria, because of those involved, nothing has happened. Today, Obasanjo is one of Nigeria’s wealthiest persons, he has turned his farm in Ota to a paradise with gigantic buildings, he forced people to donate to his library project while still in office. The practice in America is that when you leave office, you test your popularity, by asking people to donate to a project, to donate money for you, not while in office. He forced people to make donations, that was what happened. So, when people talk about corruption, it was not started by Jonathan, every successive president was corrupt.
