Yesterday, we reported here that an Islamic cleric was campaigning on Buhari's behalf with the most outrageous set of tweets possible. (Find the tweets at the bottom of this page.)
Today, Sahara Reporters has said that the Twitter account (@imamsadiq123) is fake and is designed to discredit the APC presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari.
The account began its tweeting activity on Friday and has acquired about 50 followers and is masquerading as a pro-Buhari account (while blatantly suggesting that Buhari's sole purpose for running is to cement Sharia Law when he takes office in Aso Rock.)
Social commentators have jumped on the back of the account to discredit it for trying to tarnish the APC flagbearer's name.
Tolu Ogunlesi, one of such commentators said: “it is obviously a fake account. Clearly is someone who is being mischievous, someone who wants to pose as a Buhari supporter to exploit religious tensions.”
When the account was first opened, its avatar was that of Daayiee Abdullah, the first openly gay Imam in the USA, and when people called out the account for 'bullshitting', the profile photo was changed to that of Washington DC Masjid imam, Abdul Alim Musa.
The handle has attracted pro-Jonathan handles to its cause, including @PDPYF, known as PDP Youth Frontier who have engaged the 'Imam', asking for more light to be shed into his tweets.
Omojuwa.com blogger, Japhet Omojuwa has said that this reeks of the all-too-familiar Wendell-Simlin gaffe.
“The Modus Operandi looks like something we have seen before with the Wendell Simlin scandal. The idea is to make it look like a Buhari supporter and enforce all the things that have been said about him in the past. “I have asked for it [the account] to be reported to Twitter. It is a good thing that it is being ratted out so that the impact can be checked,” he said.
Earlier in the year, Presidential aide, Reno Omokri, sent out documents in the name of a certain Wendell Simlin trying to associate former Central Bank Governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi of being behind Boko Haram.
