The Association of Psychiatrists in Nigeria on Monday advocated for the incorporation of mental health care services into primary and secondary health care facilities in the country.

This was in a communiqué issued at the end of its 44th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference in Calabar on Monday. It observed that the availability of mental health care services in the country was still relatively low.

It asked for an urgent passage of the mental health bill, as it would provide a framework for the implementation of the National Mental Health Policy.

The communiqué also decried the poor child-related social indicator in Nigeria emphasising its adverse implications for children's mental health and well-being.

It called for more participation in military training programmes by mental health practitioners as well as collaboration between civilians and the military. It also talked about the urgent need for military manpower capacity building in mental healthcare.
