Samsung mobile has lived up to the billing as one of the world's best Smartphone manufacturing brands with the launch of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge. The Samsung Galaxy S7 also comes with an "Edge" variant, thanks to the successes of its predecessor, the Galaxy S6 Edge, in the mobile market. The rivalry between Apple and Samsung for the mobile market dominance isn't over yet. However, things seem to have mellowed down a bit between these mobile giants.

The unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge also tallied with the unveiling the LG G5. The timing leaves people wondering what these competing brands have up their sleeves for each other. However, it's still too early to give a comprehensive review on the Samsung Galaxy S7. Nevertheless, we shall touch some key areas that have been scrutinized so far.

Design and Build

The previous generations of the Samsung Galaxy smartphones had some differences in design and build, so from afar you can tell the differences between them. However, there are no significant differences between the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the S7 smartphones, at least, from afar. You must come pretty close to tell the differences between them. Even at that, you might fail to recognize the differences if you don't have keen eyes for minute details.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 comes with an excellent titanium build, which is a good relieve for those that hate plastic looking smartphones. Some features are also back, like the Micro SD slot, as well as the waterproofing of the S5, which was omitted in the S6, but now it’s back with a better IP68 rating. The current IP68 rating allows the Samsung Galaxy S7 to stay submerged in 1.5 meters of water for up to 30mins. The Camera bump on the Galaxy S7 is a lot smaller than that of the S6. Although the differences in camera bump may appear insignificant to many, it helps with little differentiation between the two smartphones. The Glass-back of the Smartphone is prone to scratches and is also very slippery. So you might have to consider getting Smartphone cases with grips so as to safeguard your pricey mobile gadget.

Hardware and Specs

There is this unwritten rivalry between Samsung and Sony for dominance in the field of Smartphone display technology. Recently, Sony unveiled the Xperia Z 5 premium and tagged it "the world's first 4K Smartphone." Samsung refuted that proclamation by Sony with the unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy S7. The Samsung Galaxy S7 comes packed with a 5.1 inch Super AMOLED display buoyed by a quad HD resolution (1440 X 2560) and 576 PPi density. It doesn’t stop at that. Fans and lovers of large display screens can acquire the Edge version of this amazing Smartphone.

The Samsung galaxy S7 Edge comes with a 5.5-inch display, offering you that extra space you need to enjoy your favorite movies and games. The prominent feature of the S7 Edge version, apart from its larger display, is that it has a slightly curved screen at one of the sides of its display. Meaning, even when the Smartphone is lying on its screen, you’ll still get to see your notifications from afar, a wonderful feature if you ask me.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 also features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, boosted by a 4GB RAM. These hardware capabilities allow the Galaxy S7 handle many apps and games a lot faster than its predecessors, which is the ultimate expectation of the average user. The internal storage still the Galaxy S7 remains pegged at 32GB, which is still the same with the Galaxy S6, but then there is the microSD port which you can use to ramp-up storage capabilities to 200GB.

Software

As expected, the Samsung Galaxy S7 comes preloaded with Google's latest mobile O.S, which is the Android Marshmallow version 6.0. The Marshmallow O.S was launched late last year on the Nexus 5X and 6P platform, so it's very much relevant for 2016 smartphones. There is also the TouchWiz functionality, which has been a prominent feature in most Samsung Smartphones. It is a lot easier to use these days because Samsung has trimmed down terms of styling throughput and bloatware. Lovers of the Microsoft Office Suites will also find the Samsung Galaxy S7 smartphones handy because they come preinstalled with them. The Samsung Galaxy S7 now comes with the Vulcan API, which is optimized for improved gaming support. You can now save battery by reducing the frame rate and record your gameplay.

The Verdict

As stated earlier, it's still premature to come up with the full assessment of the Samsung Galaxy S7, owing to its recent release. However, the Samsung Galaxy S7 has lived up to the billing so far. The S6 variants were successful and generally accepted by customers and fans alike, making it difficult for Samsung to find a worthy successor for its previous flagship. However, it brought back some functionalities previously omitted in the Samsung Galaxy S6 to arouse interest in fans, as well as maintain the momentum garnered with the Galaxy S6 release. Nevertheless, it is left to be seen if the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge will consolidate on the successes achieved by its predecessor.

@Lequte, the Xiaomi Mi 5 is a beast...Capabilities similar to Samsung Galaxy S7 but lacks the waterproof feature...It has a stronger Camera than the Samsung Galaxy S7; that is on paper...The Gionee S8 is very cool, though, but the Mediatek chipset still hangs the budget smartphone tag on its neck. Surprisingly, on paper, these smartphones better the Samsung Galaxy S7 12MP camera resolution because they both feature a 16-megapixel primary camera, but in reality the Samsung Galaxy S7 beats them hands down in photo quality, even with its 12MP.

Samsung is known for its quality and standard. This is one reason why they're still at the top, although the competition is getting tougher. I love Samsung products but on paper they appear inferior to other devices. Look at Panasonic's Toughphones for example- those devices are a beast and will cost one an arm, leg and kidney.

I hear Sony's really giving Samsung a tough competition as regards display, how true?

@Lequte, yes it's been a secret war between both Giants...You know Xperia Smartphones come crazy displays and graphics. This has really boosted the confidence of Sony, as well as threatened the market dominance of Samsung Super AMOLED powered smartphones...We are still studying the situation to see who is actually the king in this regard...

I don't think there will be a winner....I'm rooting for Samsung though. Maybe when VR gadgets get absorbed fully we'll forget about things like this. IoT is the future of tech gadgets.
