Dame Patience Jonathan, first lady of Nigeria has condemned the statements in certain quarters calling for the removal of the office of the First Lady.

Her argument is that "First Ladies have made profound contributions to the development of Nigeria.”

She said this during a speech at the gand civic reception in her honor in Umuahia, Abia state.

She said that the First Lady plays key roles in national advancement, saying that the people behind the call for its scrapping are unappreciative of the First lady's achievements.

She said that in her time in office, she has positively touched the lives of several Nigerian women and youths, in the same vein that governors' wives have.

Really I don't see why the office of the first lady should be scrapped. I don't know how it came to be in the first place anyway but we really need the input of women in national development and the wife of whoever becomes president should be at the forefront.
