The police in Enugu have arrested and arraigned one Micheal Uzonna, a taxi driver, to the Federal High Court in Enugu for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl.

The accused was said to have driven the victim to an uncompleted building in Agbani where he raped her.

According to Police prosecutor Innocent Uzogbado, the taxi driver threatened the victim with a knife when she complained about the change of course. Villagers who heard the unusual noise from the usually deserted building called the police and this led to Uzonna's arrest.

Uzogbado tendered the underwear of the victim which were torn beyond recognition.

He urged the court to judge the court in a straightforward manner since the case itself was clear.

The counsel to the accused, Mrs Njideka Afam dismissed the police prosecutor's version of the story saying her client only changed directions because his particulars were expired and there was a police checkpoint on the road. Afam said the victim started shouting and refused to listen to the driver’s explanation, leading to his arrest by policemen in another check-point.

Justice Dorathy Agishi adjourned the case to Feb. 10 for continuation of hearing.
