The UN Security Council has condemned the attack on the Russian Embassy in Tripoli, on October 2, which resulted in entry into the diplomatic premises by hoodlums, with attendant serious damages to property.

A statement released by the council expressed deep concern at the attack and underlined the need to bring its perpetrators to justice.

Members of the council also called on the Libyan authorities to protect diplomatic and consular property, personnel and to respect their international obligations in this regard.

The Council recalled the fundamental principle of the inviolability of diplomatic and consular premises, and the obligations on host Governments, under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic relations. (NAN)
