The Serb had no difficulty seeing off the German whom he beat in straight sets 6-1 7-5 6-4 to go through.
The world number one will now play against Andy Murray,who saw off the challenge of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-5 7-5 6-4.
Meanwhile in the Women's draw, Serena Williams overpowered Kaia Kanepi in just one hour and five minutes winning in straight sets 6-3 6-3.
The 32-year old will now play against Italy's Flavia Pennetta, who defeated Australian Casey Dellacqua 7-5 6-2.
"I never thought it would be so exciting," Serena said.
"Yeah! It feels good. Obviously I don't want this to end. But I'm just happy that I'm able to be performing a little better at the end of the year."
Also through to the next is Victoria Azarenka who defeated Aleksandra Krunic 4-6 6-4 6-4.
