A top German government minister has called U.S. spying on Germany "stupidity", as a parliamentary committee gathered on Thursday to be briefed by intelligence officials about the growing crisis.

The Finance Minister, Wolfgang Schaeuble, the often outspoken elder statesman of Chancellor Angela Merkel's cabinet, said that it was right for Germany and the U.S. to share anti-terrorism intelligence.

Report says Germany is investigating two espionage cases and has not denied media statements that the U.S. is suspected of paying both the alleged moles that were uncovered inside its security bureaucracy.

"But that does not mean it is okay for the Americans to recruit third-raters over here. The degree of stupidity makes you want to cry,’’ he said, referring to the suspects.

Wolfgang said that profound disagreement in matters of security and civil liberties reigns between the two nations.

Germany has expressed fury at being spied on by an ally, arguing that this undermines a trust where Berlin freely discloses its knowledge to the U.S.

Report says U.S. commentators have retorted that Germany needs to grow up and accept that everybody does espionage.

The closed-door intelligence committee of Germany's Bundestag parliament was set to meet in Berlin in the middle of the day.

However the group has been regularly briefed by intelligence chiefs, although its sessions were supposed to be top secret, snippets of information often become public after the briefings.

Meanwhile, a staff at the BND foreign intelligence service was arrested last week and reportedly confessed to selling documents to a U.S. intermediary.
