Now the voting is finally over, we can begin to look forward to the real fun – this year’s Oscars!
According to Scott Feinberg, an expert on the Oscars who works with The Hollywood Reporter, it is tougher to predict the winner of the Best Picture category correctly. Mind you, Scott predicted 21 out of 24 winners in 2013.
However, the Best Picture award seems like it would go to either of these three: 12 Years a Slave, Gravity or American Hustle.
Let’s Talk 12 Years
Feinberg personally favours the movie 12 Years a Slave – it has nine nominations in total. Now, if 12 Years a Slave, a Steve McQueen film, is named best picture at the Oscars, it would make it the first time a black director’s film is taking the top prize.
Gravity or American Hustle? If Gravity clinches it, History will be made
Gravity and American both had ten nominations each. Feinberg says here that the film with the most nominations often wins, but the thing with the Academy is that they have never given the best picture award to a science fiction or a 3D film.
If Gravity wins, history would be made – on two counts!
Describing American Hustle, Feinberg says "American Hustle people clearly like a lot - it's only the 15th movie to get nominated in all for acting categories. But it's hard to see how it appeals to the present day - it doesn't really have a lot of gravitas. It's really a period piece dram-edy. The last comedy to win best picture was Annie Hall 36 years ago.
"Both Gravity and American Hustle have a lot of history up against them."
Meanwhile, let’s not forget the Woody Allen Molestation Scandal
It was in the middle of the Oscar race that allegations came up that one of the nominees for Best Original Song, Woody Allen, molested his adopted daughter. Woody Allen has denied those allegations, by the way.
Allen is nominated for Best Original Screenplay for the film Blue Jasmine, and the actresses Cate Blanchett and Sally Hawkins are up in the categories for actresses.
Now, here’s the juice: Blanchett has been pencilled as favourite for best actress for several months, but might it be possible that the Woody Allen molestation scandal has affected the final votes?
Feinberg says “I haven’t heard it come up at all with Oscar voters. I don’t think it will affect Cate Blanchett at all.”
If Blanchett loses, we are sure people would bring the scandal up as the reason she lost. Feinberg reacts to this possibility by saying “it may or may not be fair to the person who beats her, but I don’t think there’s a likely scenario that she loses at all. She has not lost any award for which she’s been up so far.”
Some other Wildcards to Throw In
Now, if Jennifer Lawrence wins the Best Supporting Actress award, it would be back-to-back win wins for the 23-year old actress. She won last year for the movie Silver Linings Playbook.
Many believe that the comedy film Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa will clinch a win in the hair and make-up category.
However, a great shock comes from the team behind the make-up in Dallas Buyers Club
They have revealed that the budget for the entire 28-day production was...don’t hold your breath...$250.
Also, might 2014 be the year Mickey Mouse gets his first Oscar? His first Oscar for 72 years straight.
The veteran cartoon character dates as far back as 1928, making him 86 years old. However, he stars in Disney’s Get a Horse! Which is up for Best Animated Short.
Mickey Mouse’s last appearance was in Lend a Paw in 1941, where he starred alongside Pluto.
