A bleeding vagina is often a signal of a biological process taking place within the female body; it could be a normal biological process or an abnormally. When your vagina bleeds, your body is simply trying to pass you a message.

Normal vaginal bleeding, also known as menorrhea, is the periodic blood that flows as a discharge from the woman's uterus. Menstruation is the process by which menorrhea occurs. There’s usually nothing to worry about with menstruation, unless it’s irregular, heavy, discolored, scanty or painful.

Abnormal vaginal bleeding is usually an unexpected bleeding. It can be described as bleeding other than a normal menstrual period. In a woman who has not had a menstrual period for 12 months, vaginal bleeding is always abnormal. Abnormal vaginal bleeding is usually associated with several factors such as:

1. Cancers and Precancerous Conditions

A cancer of any of the following organs can cause bleeding:

· Cervix

· Vagina

· Uterus

· Ovaries

2. Medications and Devices

· Retained tampon

· Intrauterine device (IUD)

· Stopping or changing method of birth control

3. Inherited Conditions

Inherited medical conditions, such as hemophilia, can cause excessive virginal bleeding.

4. Infection

Infection of the reproductive organs can cause inflammation and bleeding. Some infections which can cause virginal bleeding include:

· Chlamydia

· Gonorrhea

· Vaginitis

· Endometritis

· Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)

· Bacterial vaginosis

5. Endocrine Factors

· Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

· Hyper/hypothyroidism

6. Fertility/Reproduction Factors

· Ectopic pregnancy

· Pregnancy

· Random ovulatory cycles

· Perimenopause

· Miscarriage

7. Trauma

· Sexual abuse

· Penetrating injury

A bleeding vagina must never be ignored, especially if it comes with symptoms such as lightheadedness, severe abdominal pain, or fevers. Never resort to self-help when faced with a bleeding vagina. See your doctor anytime you have abnormal vaginal bleeding.

A bleeding vagina is often a cry for help – get your vagina the help it deserves!
