1. According to Wikipedia, 0.9% of adults within the age range of 15-49 are carrying the HIV.

2. Nigeria is the country with the second largest number of people carrying the virus, with an estimated 2.6million Nigerians living with the virus in the country. The country with the highest HIV population is Africa with 5.7million infected people. The third country is India, with an estimated 2.4million HIV/AIDS carriers/suffers.

3. Benue is the highest HIV/AIDS infected state in Nigeria, while Kebbi is the lowest, according to the image below.

4. Young women have higher risks of contracting the virus than young men, and youths and young adults in Nigeria are more susceptible to contracting HIV/AIDS, possibly due to their higher sexual activity level.

5. Some of the factors that predispose Nigerians to contracting the HIV/AIDS virus include the high prevalence of other STIs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases), prostitution, clandestine high-risk homosexual and heterosexual practices, international women trafficking, irregular and inept blood screening and risky practices among itinerant workers.

6. From a 2011 report, it is estimated that about 210,000 people die yearly in Nigeria from HIV/AIDS

7. In Men who have sex with men (MSM), the HIV prevalence in Nigeria is 17.2%. Brothel and non-brothel female sex workers (FSW) have a HIV prevalence of 24.5%, while people who take intravenous drugs (IDUs) have a HIV prevalence of 4.2%

8. Members of the Police Force, transport workers and members of Armed forces are considered high-risk people as far as HIV/AIDS is concerned. People who have these job descriptions (along with their partners) have been found to account for 40% of new reported cases of HIV infections in Nigeria.

9. Nigeria accounts for 10% of the global HIV burden.

10. As at 2008, the HIV statistics for gender in Nigeria was 33% for women and 22% for men.
