The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC will today conduct a rerun election in Imo state.

The election in Imo will take place in in 250 polling booths across the 23 councils. The election is expected to be a race between Governor Rochas Okorocha of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Emeka Ihedioha of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP who is Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.

The election is very important to Nigeria's 2 major political parties; APC and PDP. For the PDP, victory in Imo kills APC presence in the South East as the party was enable to win the governorship election in any state in the region.

For the APC, victory in Imo means the party still has a chance to survive and grow in the south-east plus it dispels rumors of it being a North and South-West party.

Today's election in Imo will be decided by 2 contrasting key factors;

  • South-Eastern i don't give a damn behavior

They survived on $20 after the civil war and believe they can survive anything. To most people, the PDP winning Imo solidifies the south-east's position as Nigeria's next political frontier.

  • Desire to belong to a new Nigeria
There's a certain fear that Muhammadu Buhari will sideline states that didn't support him during the election. A statement issued by the APC on April 21st said, ''We urge the good people of Imo State to complete the good works they have started, for a vote for Owelle Rochas Okorocha is a golden vote to retain the only egg Ndigbo has in the basket of the new Nigeria General Muhammadu Buhari (GMB) is constructing''.
