Former military head of state and leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari while speaking with newsmen after registering for the party in the ongoing membership registration at the Babban Gida polling unit of Sarkin Yara ‘A’ ward in Daura, has condemned the planned national conference, describing it as an attempt to waste the nation’s hard earned resources.
“I have been consistently against the national conference. Firstly, the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as I understand, gives room and the right to the National Assembly, the upper and the lower house to initiate the change or the amendments of the constitution.
“Now can we afford seven billion which was not in the budget to be used for a national conference when there is an institution, the National Assembly, which is constitutionally empowered to do it? Do we have the resources for that luxury?”
“Personally, I am not for the national conference. It is the duty of the National Assembly, it is in place and it is capable of doing it, let it do it and let us save resources for other things,” he added.
He also faulted the recently released 2015 election time table by INEC and advocated the conduct of all elections in one day as a means to discourage rigging.
