It is instructive of the amount of distrust Nigerians have for constituted authorities that when reports came out that CBN was on fire, most people refused to take it at face value. People are not willing to take the incident of the fire in CBN as a natural disaster, but are more inclined to suspect foul play at work.

A few hours ago, we reported that the Lagos State Office of the Central Bank of Nigeria was on fire. Someone on Vanguard’s Facebook page commented thus: “hmmmmm so they are burning evidence to cover fraud.”

Another replied thusly, “If they like let it be hell fire we don’t care. Our $20bn is still missing and we want it. Document can be burnt but they can never burn the truth. kudos Sanusi!”

A final commenter said, “All of a sudden the CBN building is on fire? How ironic and coincidental! What? With the CBN caretaker (Sanusi) removed, and allegations of billions of naira ‘missing’, is it not the right time to burn the ‘evidence’ down?”

Others believe that it is common that when high level investigations begin in Nigeria, things will begin to ‘burn’ mysteriously.
